150 years ago when this Hotel was
built
One
hundred and fifty years ago commercial amusements were appearing in the
open air. Sailing and fishing quickly became popular, as did excursions
to explore the resort hinterland. Donkey riding also became a favourite
pastime, particularly of the ladies, although the gentlemen in their party
usually accompanied them on these outings. Sitting and lazing on the beach
passed many a pleasant hour and, as early as 1829, visitors were paying
1d per day for the hire of chairs, the forerunners of our 20th century
deckchairs. As well as providing refreshments, the resorts offered dancing
among the trees, band playing and firework displays.
