A week before Opening Day, across the country, growers of roses and rhubarb, cabbages and capsicums put the finishing touches to nature in their nurseries and potting sheds, while the normally peaceful grounds of the Royal Hospital on Chelsea Embankment are being transformed into perfect gardens for every conceivable climate. As the big day approaches, tempers and nerves fray. After all, winning an award is the pinnacle of horticultural achievement. This quirky and eccentric event appears to monarchy, vicars’ wives, and young suburban couples alike - all eager to learn the Latin names of their favourite species and celebrate nature in the heart of a traffic-congested capital city.
