Boating has always been a way of life at Henley-on-Thames, a peacefully slumbering Oxfordshire town more famous for its regatta, than its stunning scenery. Some view the regatta as the premier rowing event of the year, widely respected and competed in by international teams. Others view it as an all-male preserve into which women are reluctantly invited, on condition they conduct themselves according to archaic male rules. Most, however, view the regatta as a jolly summertime knees-up on the riverside, which begins when the straw hats and boaters, club ties and blazers are fished out of mothballs the day before.
