Polo might look easy from your side of a champagne glass, but tearing down the field at 30 mph, leaning at a precarious angle astride a huge skidding beast, left hand clutching the bridle, right hand manoeuvring the 52 inch mallet-headed bamboo stick, while being tackled by the opposition, is no mean feat. Not only must the players be physically tough, they are also required to be riding fit, have high levels of skill and hand-eye co-ordination and a commitment to team work. Polo is fast, dangerous and difficult, pursued only b y the very rich arrive by helicopter or Aston Martin: offspring of industrial magnates, rich aristocrats and the Prince of Wales. Sheltering from the rain in dazzling company, enjoying a three-course lunch and fine burgundies just adds lustre to the event.
