Make the most of the coast with a trip to Brighton. From bargain-hunting to sightseeing to plain old loafing about, you'll find an easy way to fill your day in "London sur la Mer". Names like Hocus Pocus, Snoopers Paradise and Pussy say it all: Brighton's shopping scene is bursting with life. It's a brilliant destination for jaded shopaholics who prefer quirky little specialty shops. Once you step off the train (and public transport is the best method of getting there, given Brighton's parking nightmare), exit the station, take a steep left under the railway bridge and shopping can begin within a couple of hundred yards. You are about to enter the North Laines area, the arty/studenty/trendy part, as opposed to the Lanes which is touristy and twee. Most people don't come to Brighton purely for the shopping. They come to chill out by the sea. They come for (illegal) beach parties, for the pier, for the clubs. They even come to escape from themselves (all things New Age are big news here). But be warned - the shopping is so diverting, I have spent whole trips without even glimpsing the sea. Everything used and abused can be found in Brighton, often much cheaper than the equivalents in London. These second-hand shops range from the grubby-but-cheap army surplus shop in Trafalgar Street to the highly stylised Nice 'n' Easy on Sydney Street and funky furnishings shops. One of the most popular is Rokit, a trendy vintage clothes shop. 18/19 Charlotte Street, Brighton, East Sussex,
